Wondering why twitter is better than jaiku from an overall user experience POV...in spite of the obvious performance issues.

my vote goes to Jaiku..feels like a community, twitter is just inconsequential rambings ...just my view.

Jaiku is definitely one to watch

Jaiku offers a much richer experience. Wait until the current beta client is released more generally!

Most definitely! If you own an S60 3rd edition phone, the upcoming beta update will convert you 100%. I can't even remember the last time I looked at twitter.

I think on the surface they are quite similar ... Group IM but Jaiku is actually much richer and makes conversation -- not just broadcast -- much easier and richer.

Personally, I think the two big things that twitter has going for it are 1) community size, and 2) functioning SMS in north america.

We can fix the second (but, my god it's a slow process), but we can't directly fix the first, we can only make it such that existing Jaikuites are likely to bring their friends over to join us, or otherwise make Jaiku an attractive option for people.

When Jaiku IM becomes public, it should also make a difference. Twitter IM is far too unstable for me.

Yeah, I gave up on twitter IM when i realised I was getting about 1 message in 4. And yes, the Jaiku IM rocks :)

I can't wait for Jaiku IM. That'll make it better. As well as a N. American Shortcode. Has Jaiku tried getting one yet?

Now there's Pownce to deal with. It's dumb to keep recreating this app.

Jaiku is much better for me: 'cos it allows comments like this (threading), and because of the s60 app. The only thing that keeps me going back to Twitter, and occasionally, is some of the people who are there who are only on Twitter.

I like Jaiku, don't have a Twitter acct and don't plan to open one. But the wait for the new S60 client is killing me - I think it's obvious from my posts about it....hint, hint ;)

huslage - it shouldn't be too far away - currently it's in very limited numbers closed beta while we make sure it will scale appropriately. The last thing we want is for people to find it unreliable.

angelmartinez - well, the official answer is 'it will be ready when it's ready', but I think we're pretty close to a release. If you'd like to get in on the beta, let me know and I'll see what I can arrange :)

@malach, thanks for the reply. If at all possible, I'd love to be part of the beta. If there is anything you can do, let me know and I'd be grateful. Thanks

angelmartinez - send email to teemu@jaiku.com and he'll add you to the group. Please include your IMEI code in the email; you can get it by typing *#06# on your handset.

    Email sent, thanks a lot!

@Malach I think we're all dying for that S60 beta. I'd take it even if it is unreliable. Going to a computer to post comments sucks. Imagine that I'm complaining about going to a computer. I guess Nokia phones really are what computers have become.

I'll tell you though the m. site is pretty stellar as well and offers most of what I want in an easy to use format. I've been living on it via iPhone for the past week and while it's not as slick as the S60 UI it's really very handy.

The key thing with any service though is where you are having conversations with like minded contacts and friends. That can happen on a crappy site - the content is you, which I believe is Jyri's first principal. Jaiku delivers because it's super easy to maintain contact and context in what's been happening -- even when and especially when you step away.

@atmasphere from what I've seen, you step away very little even with the iphone ;)

My wife has noticed that as well... ;)

I had a twitter account first but checked out Jaiku out of curiosity following the great Laporte Migration :) I wasn't part of a community on either twitter or Jaiku, but I feel a lot more at home on Jaiku. The experience is richer and it doesn't feel like an exclusive club, which is the feeling I got with twitter.

Mine, too. That's why I need the beta client so I don't have to sneak off to the computer that much. uh oh...better go :)

@smperris - I think one of the really nice things about Jaiku is that anyone can comment - you don't have to be co-listed as a contact which makes it hard to know if the person is hearing or ignoring you on Twitter.

I like the simplicity of Twitter and like the feed feature on Jaiku, so I run both. And Pownce of course to use the file sendign and the Events features. In my opinion one doesnt exclude the other. Jaiku is cool cause one just has to post to other places and it runs itself so to speak.

I'm on both twitter and jaiku because I have people with whom I want to stay connected (thanks to both services). Trying to avoid Pownce, but am on there too.

  • smperris

@atmasphere - exactly. twitter was too much like talking into a vacuum for my liking.

  • lemonad

@atmasphere: Yes, I definitely agree about the comments. In terms of distinguishing between friends and followers, Jaiku actually has the same possibilities as twitter—people just aren't using it as much here. What I mean is that you can friend someone and then unsubscribe from their Jaikus.

I switched to jaiku simply for the s60 client

    @cdrum that works
